The Troy ISD Board of Trustees has approved the hiring of Jarrod Smith as the district’s next Athletic Director and Head Football coach. Smith brings more than 20 years of experience in education as a teacher, coach, and administrator, along with a strong commitment to developing student-athletes both on and off the field.
Smith joined Troy High School in 2023 as the Offensive Coordinator and a social studies teacher, where he helped lead the program to back-to-back playoff appearances. A graduate of Troy High School’s Class of 1998, Smith is well-connected to the Troy community, with family ties spanning more than 100 years.
For Smith, stepping into this role is especially meaningful. “This opportunity is very meaningful because of my deep roots in the Troy community,” he said. “It is an honor to have the opportunity to serve the students, families, and community in this capacity.”
Throughout his career, Smith has viewed education and athletics as a calling—one that allows him to help shape students into leaders. As Athletic Director, he plans to build on that foundation by focusing on excellence across all programs and the overall development of student-athletes.
“My primary goal is to build a program committed to excellence across all sports,” Smith said. “Success will be measured not only by wins, but by how we develop our student-athletes.”
His vision includes strengthening alignment across all athletic programs, supporting and developing coaches, and fostering a culture built on accountability, communication, and growth. Smith also emphasized the importance of preparing students for success beyond athletics.
“I believe in developing the whole student-athlete—mind, body, and character,” he said. “Athletics should prepare students for success in life, not just in competition.”
Smith is eager to continue the proud tradition of Trojan and Trojanette athletics while expanding opportunities for all students. He looks forward to working alongside coaches, students, and the community to build on the district’s strong foundation.
“I am most excited about the opportunity to work with our students, support our coaches, and continue the proud tradition of Trojan and Trojanette athletics,” Smith said.
As he begins this new role, Smith remains focused on creating a program grounded in integrity, discipline, and effort—one that helps every student reach their full potential.
Troy ISD looks forward to the continued growth and success of its athletic programs under Smith’s leadership.
