🎶 The Spirit of Troy: Color Guard and Band March Toward State 🎶

The Troy Trojan Band is heading to the UIL State Marching Contest, marking an incredible milestone in a season defined by hard work, growth, and unity. Among the band’s shining stars is the Troy Color Guard, whose artistry and dedication help bring the show to life — and whose story this year is one of heart, teamwork, and belief.
Band Director Rustin Honeycutt shared the journey of Addi Ortiz, a student whose perseverance has become a powerful symbol of the Trojan spirit. When Addi moved to Troy as a sophomore, her previous directors advised against using her in performances, saying she wasn’t ready. But at Troy, she was given a chance — and she rose to it.
“She just needed someone to believe in her,” her director said. “Now, she’s the one who gets to end our show — the perfect symbol of how far she’s come.”
Today, Addi shines in the guard’s closing moment, tossing the final poker chip that completes the performance — a reflection of her own journey.
“It’s amazing, especially for me and the rest of the seniors,” Addi shared. “We have a great opportunity to end our season and career together at State with such an amazing team.”
Throughout the season, the guard has faced challenges that tested their focus and teamwork. Ava Mims, the Color Guard Captain, recalled one moment that showed just how far the group had come.
“A piece of equipment was placed wrong, and a member of our team did exactly what she was supposed to do,” Ava said. “She kept the biggest smile on her face and pushed through until the end of the performance. That really showed how much we can overcome challenges we can’t predict.”
Addi reflected on how far the team has grown since those early summer practices.
“At the first practice, we didn’t really know each other at all,” she said. “Now it’s like having one big friend group. We can all talk about our problems, and we trust each other completely. That’s what makes us such a good guard.”
As State approaches, Ava says she’s most proud of how the newer members have stepped up.
“The amount of work they’ve put in is so much greater than in years past,” Ava said. “As captain, I’m proud to know I’ve helped them grow and that they’re ready for when we’re gone.”
And for Addi, the goal for State is simple but powerful.
“I hope we just give it our all,” she said. “Go out there with confidence, do our best, and have our best run at State.”
From long rehearsals to moments of quiet encouragement, the Troy Trojan Band and Color Guard have shown that belief, teamwork, and heart can take you far — all the way to State.
