The first grade team at Mays Elementary School recently engaged in specific, job-embedded professional development related to how best to teach phonics using our instructional resources and the teachers’ work in Reading Academies. First, the team observed as Mrs. Doskocil modeled a lesson with her students. After that, the team debriefed in a Q&A session led by one of our ESC 12 partners. Finally, the instructional coaches and campus administrators made a point to circle back to all first grade teachers’ classrooms to assist them with the changes and improvements prompted by the conversation. Reading Academies is a state-required course of professional learning focused on the science of teaching reading. A large portion of the Reading Academies curriculum for teachers is related to teaching phonics. Shout out to the MES first grade teacher team for their work to bring their professional learning directly to the classroom for the benefit of student learning!
